I placed a clean cloth on the bed next to me and unfolded it. I pulled out the thinnest needle I could find, the cotton thread I’d cut and a lighter. I held the needle in the flame until it glowed red and then I let it cool before threading the eye. “Sometimes you can use super glue for a cut, but this is more than a cut. I’m afraid all I can do is crudely attach the two pieces together and see if they mend. But no promises.” I moved closer and realized my biggest hurdle was being this close to him and having to concentrate on something other than the fact that I wanted him to touch me. I cleaned the ear front and back with the antiseptic I’d brought and then sat back. “You ready?”

He looked completely calm. “After what I’ve been through this should be a fucking cake walk, especially because all I’ll be thinking about is you pressed up against me.”

I laughed. “You really are feeling better.”

“Way better.”

I was pretty steady handed when it came to stuff like this, and I always figured I’d have made a good surgeon or battlefield medic. The one thing that life with the club had afforded me was plenty of opportunities to play doctor. But this was the first time I’d had a patient who made it hard to concentrate. I took a deep breath and realized I was at an odd angle for stitching. “I need to be straight on.” I hadn’t really thought about what I was doing until my leg went over him, and I was straddled across his lap. I sat down on him and he grinned.

“Works for me,” he said. We were both wearing jeans, but I wasn’t imagining the rock hard erection pressing against my crotch.

“This might be harder than I thought,” I said.

“It’s harder than I thought too.”

“O.K. Mr. Sexual Innuendo, I need to focus on my surgical skills, and you are not helping.”

“Fine, I’ll stop, but I only have control of things from the waist up.”

I shook my head and leaned forward. I grasped the needle firmly in my fingers and pushed through the solid skin near the top of the tear. Much of the skin on his lobe had been shredded to the point that a stitch would never hold. I needed to start farther across the ear where the skin was still intact and could hold a stitch without ripping more. His cheek crinkled up for a second, but that was the only indication he gave that he felt any pain. Once I got into the rhythm, and once I’d blocked his nearness out of my head, the entire procedure went quickly.

I sat back and admired my handiwork. The black thread and knots looked like a miniature set of train tracks. “Not bad. Some of my prettier work, I think. Your ear looks good.” For the first time I pulled my attention from my stitchery and looked at his face.
